ENGIE’s battery storage project in Vilvoorde fully commissioned
This milestone marks the full commissioning of the entire 200 MW/800 MWh capacity, and the start of commercial operation of one of Europe's largest battery parks, barely 16 months after the ground-breaking ceremony, and 2 months ahead of schedule. ENGIE is currently looking into the possibility of expanding the Vilvoorde project with a third section, bringing the total capacity to 300 MW/1200 MWh.
Today, on November 14, 2025, ENGIE has started commercial operation of all 320 lithium-ion battery containers of its Vilvoorde Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Belgium. The system’s total electricity storage capacity amounts to 800 megawatt hours, which corresponds to the average daily consumption of approximately 96,000 Belgian households. At maximum load, the batteries can absorb 200 megawatts of power for 4 hours, and then feed the stored energy back into the grid for 4 hours later in the day, providing a portion of the flexibility that the electricity grid needs for maintaining the balance between supply and demand at all times.
Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium: "Flexible production and storage technologies are at the heart of ENGIE's strategy, as they are essential for the transition to a carbon-neutral energy system based on renewable energy sources. With our battery projects, we are putting this strategy into practice, playing a key role in building the sustainable economy of tomorrow. By the 4th quarter of 2027, ENGIE will be operating 380 MW/1.5 GWh of battery storage capacity in Belgium, thereby delivering a significant contribution to the country’s security of supply and grid stability."
Nicolas Van den Abeele, Managing Director Renewables BE-NL: “With the very efficient and swift completion of our first large-scale battery project in Belgium, our motivated teams have proven once again that ENGIE has the people, partners and expertise to deliver on its energy transition commitments. Exciting new milestones are ahead: the BESS Kallo construction site is progressing well, and in a couple of months we will start work on the BESS Drogenbos project, which was granted a 15-year capacity contract in the most recent CRM auction.”
By early 2026, a decision will be made regarding a possible expansion of the Vilvoorde battery park by an additional 100 MW/400 MWh, subject to obtaining the required permit and connection capacity to the high-voltage grid.
