Mission accomplished: ENGIE's Flémalle power plant is now ready to support the grid

Since October 31, ENGIE's new combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Flémalle has been available to contribute to Belgium's security of supply. After a testing phase, the plant now adds 875 MW of flexible capacity to the grid. It will be an indispensable complement to renewable energies and will make a major contribution to the country's security of electricity supply.

Since October 31, 2025, ENGIE's power plant in Flémalle provides Belgium with 875 megawatts of additional electricity generation capacity, thereby fulfilling the commitments made under the Belgian Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM). This achievement marks a key milestone in this large-scale industrial project, that began on October 31, 2021, with the selection of the Flémalle project in the first auction of the Belgian Capacity Remuneration Mechanism for a 15-year capacity contract with TSO Elia. ENGIE's new CCGT (combined cycle power plant) can supply more than one million Belgian households with electricity. It represents an investment of €650 million and employed an average of 500 people throughout the construction period.

The ultra-modern Flémalle power plant is a remarkable asset in several respects. Its modulation capacity (50 MW per minute when operational) contributes to the security of electricity supply in Belgium and provides a flexible complement to wind and solar energy. It is also highly efficient, with an efficiency of over 63% (around 5 to 10% higher than many other power plants that are currently being operated), making it one of the most efficient power plants in the world. It is also future-proof: it has been designed to eventually become CO2 neutral.

Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE in Belgium: "Complementing our other energy generation and storage infrastructure, the Flémalle power plant is now a strong link in the Belgian energy mix. Thanks to its great flexibility, it is an crucial partner to the development of renewable energies, a major strategic focus for ENGIE. This project, which is essential to the success of the energy transition in Belgium, was a major challenge, both in human and technological terms. The commitment, determination, and skills of the colleagues and partners involved have made this project a real success."

Following the first firing, which was successfully carried out last August in collaboration with Tractebel, and a series of in-depth tests and adjustments to the steam turbine, the power plant is now meeting its availability commitments to the transmission system operator. Only a few final tests remain to be carried out.

Wim Broos, Managing Director Generation Belgium: “The commissioning of the new Flémalle power plant marks a new chapter in the history of this site, which has evolved along with electricity generation technology since 1951. I would like to commend the resilience and dedication of our teams and partners, who, despite a very tight schedule, have safely brought this project to fruition.”

ENGIE commissions first half of the Vilvoorde battery park

ENGIE has officially started commercial operation of the first 100 MW/400 MWh of its battery park in Vilvoorde. Once the second half is completed by the end of the year, the entire 200 MW/800 MWh installation will be one of the largest battery energy storage systems (‘BESS’) in Europe. This landmark project enhances the integration of renewable energy sources into Belgium's energy system, and reinforces its resilience.

First spade in the ground marks start of construction for ENGIE’s new battery park in Vilvoorde

Today, on 5 July 2024, a ground breaking celebration in the presence of mayor Hans Bonte marked the start of the construction of a new 200 MW battery park on the ENGIE site in Vilvoorde. From September 2025, the batteries will be available to store 800 MWh of electricity and inject it into the grid for up to four hours. This type of flexibility, one of ENGIE's strategic priorities, will provide essential support to the power grid.
