ENGIE to build a new battery park in Drogenbos, expanding its battery storage capacity in Belgium to almost 400 MW
ENGIE will soon begin construction of a new 80 MW/320 MWh battery park at its site in Drogenbos (Flemish Brabant), near Brussels. Following earlier projects in Vilvoorde and Kallo, this will be ENGIE's third large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Belgium, marking another significant step forward in the country’s energy transition. Construction is scheduled to start in March 2026 and will be completed by September 2027.
On 30 October 2025, high-voltage grid operator Elia announced that ENGIE’s Drogenbos project has been selected in the fifth Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction, securing a 15-year capacity contract starting in November 2027. The CRM was introduced by the federal government to safeguard Belgium’s electricity supply during the coming winters.
The new 80 MW/320 MWh project will comprise 88 battery modules that can supply power for up to four hours — equivalent to 64,000 home batteries of 5 kWh each, or the average daily electricity consumption of 38,400 households.
The Drogenbos battery park will be ENGIE’s third large-scale battery energy storage system in Belgium, after Vilvoorde (200 MW/800 MWh) and Kallo (100 MW/400 MWh). Together, these projects will represent a total installed capacity of 380 MW and a total storage capacity of 1.5 GWh. They will deliver an essential contribution to grid stability and maximize renewable energy integration into the Belgian electricity system.
Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium says: “With this new battery park, we are strengthening our current position as the Belgian reference in flexible energy generation and storage. It is no coincidence that flexibility is one of the three cornerstones of ENGIE’s strategy in Belgium, alongside renewable energy and smart customer solutions. The flexible storage capacity of batteries will play a key role in tomorrow's energy system: by balancing supply and demand, they support the electricity grid and help us make optimal use of the available renewable energy.”
