Under construction

The Kallo Battery Park

ENGIE is currently building a new 100 MW battery park (Li-ion batteries) at its Kallo site. The batteries will be able to supply energy for four hours, representing 400 MWh of storage capacity, equivalent to 80,000 home batteries of 5 kWh. Once fully charged, they could cover the electricity consumption of more than 48,000 households.

38 rows of battery modules, each measuring 25 m × 4 m × 3 m, will be installed at the Kallo site. Each module will be connected to an inverter and a transformer measuring 11 m × 7 m × 3 m.

ENGIE will own and operate the facility.

ENGIE will make every effort to minimize disturbance to local residents during both the construction and operation phases. We will also continue to keep you informed of important project information and developments through this page.

Below, we answer some relevant questions you may have. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at bess.kallo@engie.com.

Will there be any disturbance during construction and operation?

During construction, equipment such as transformers, battery cells and inverters will need to be transported to the site, which may involve heavy vehicle traffic. ENGIE will make use of waterborne transport whenever possible and will use the quays located to the north of the site. All transport movements will access the site via the northern entrance (Singelweg).

During operation of the battery park, the existing site entrance (Kapeldijkstraat, Kallo) will be used. Traffic is not expected to increase significantly, as the battery park can be controlled and monitored remotely, meaning no permanent on-site presence is required.

Are measures being taken to prevent fire risks?

Safety is ENGIE’s top priority. The battery modules are certified in accordance with international safety standards for energy storage systems. In addition, numerous preventive measures are in place to minimize the risk of fire.

The battery park will also be fully equipped with a fire detection system and a sprinkler system supplied by a local water storage facility.

Will there be noise disturbance for local residents?

ENGIE is committed to minimizing inconvenience for local residents, both during construction and throughout the operation of the battery park.

Given the very limited noise sources (mainly transformers and cooling units), noise assessments have shown that the battery park will not have any significant acoustic impact on the surrounding area, including nearby residents and natural environments.

The installation will therefore comply with all applicable noise standards.
