BESS Battery Park Vilvoorde

With a total capacity of 200 MW / 800 MWh, ENGIE’s battery park in Vilvoorde is the largest in Belgium and ranks among the biggest in Europe. It consists of 320 lithium-ion containers that can store 200 megawatts of electricity for 4 hours at full power and release it back to the grid for another 4 hours later in the day. This is equivalent to the average daily electricity consumption of 96,000 Belgian households.

A key driver for the energy transition

The flexible storage capacity of batteries plays a crucial role in the energy system of tomorrow: by balancing supply and demand, they support the electricity grid and enable us to make the most of available renewable energy. They are an essential complement to the growing share of renewable sources such as wind and solar in the electricity mix, making them a vital link in the energy transition. In addition to Vilvoorde, ENGIE is currently building battery parks in Kallo and Drogenbos. By the fourth quarter of 2027, ENGIE will have a total battery storage capacity of 380 MW / 1.5 GWh in Belgium.

Vincent Verbeke, CEO ENGIE Belgium:

“Flexible production and storage technologies are at the core of our strategy because they are essential for the transition to a carbon-neutral energy system based on renewable sources. With our battery projects, we put that strategy into practice and contribute to building the sustainable economy of tomorrow.”
