Doel 3 is permanently shut down
On September 23, Electrabel has permanently disconnected the Doel 3 reactor from the high-voltage grid, in accordance with the Act of 31 January 2003 on the gradual phase-out of nuclear energy for industrial electricity production. This means Doel 3 is the first Belgian nuclear power plant to stop producing electricity for good. The first activities related to the post operational phase and subsequent dismantling will begin.

Closing of the agreement between ENGIE and the Belgian government
This final step following the European Commission’s approval on February 21 2025, resulted in the payment of the first instalment related to the transfer of responsibility for nuclear waste and spent fuel. The second instalment will be paid when the reactors restart in November 2025.

Code Red action: objectifying the debate
The Red Code organization organised four days of action against ENGIE in early July 2023. ENGIE respected the freedom of speech and demonstration, but considered it important to conduct the debate based on objective elements.
Among other things, the claim that ENGIE is the most polluting company in Belgium is factually incorrect. Code Red also made wrong assumptions about ENGIE's strategy and activities.

ENGIE signs an agreement with the Belgian government on the extension of Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear reactors and all obligations related to nuclear waste
On 29 June 2023, ENGIE and the Belgian government signed an intermediate agreement defining the terms of the extension of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear units. This agreement aims to ensure a balanced distribution of risks between the two parties and to eliminate uncertainties concerning future changes in provisions related to the treatment of all nuclear waste.
