Energy production

ENGIE has local, diversified and flexible production facilities in Belgium with one of the lowest CO2-emission levels in Europe. ENGIE is also a major player in the production of green electricity in Belgium, with an installed capacity of 720 MW. The electricity is produced in Belgium, close to the end-user, at around 85 locations and with approximately 200 large and small production units. This diversification enables optimal utilisation of the complementarity between technologies, using them to their best advantage, and inhibiting their disadvantages, with a view to ensuring a constant, uninterrupted electricity supply for our customers, irrespective of the conditions.

The balanced energy mix is a key element in our strategy. It is the obvious answer to the various challenges with respect to the environment, economy and energy: 

  • Supplying and delivering energy at competitive prices 
  • Providing a stable electricity supply, irrespective of weather conditions 
  • Limiting CO2-emissions 
  • Compensating for the fluctuating availability of some green technologies (wind turbines only run when it’s windy; solar panels only provide energy when the sun shines).  

ENGIE aims to consolidate its position as an innovative green energy producer and continues to invest in renewable energies. ENGIE wishes to further expand its wind capacity and realise 1,000 MW by 2030. When it comes to solar power, ENGIE aims to have installed 300 MW by the end of 2030.

Flexible production

Flexible production involves the use of innovative technologies such as gas-fired power plants, battery energy storage systems and hydrogen production technologies. These technologies can be used to meet fluctuations in energy demand, compensate for the intermittency of renewable energies, and ensure the stability of the electricity grid.

Belgium has 7 nuclear power plants: 4 in Doel and 3 in Tihange. The 5 operational Belgian nuclear power plants together produce about a third of the country's total electricity consumption, without CO₂ emissions. Nuclear energy is important for Belgium, for guaranteeing the electricity supply 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, for achieving the climate objectives, for the competitiveness of electricity prices and for local employment.

Doel 3 is permanently shut down

On September 23, Electrabel has permanently disconnected the Doel 3 reactor from the high-voltage grid, in accordance with the Act of 31 January 2003 on the gradual phase-out of nuclear energy for industrial electricity production. This means Doel 3 is the first Belgian nuclear power plant to stop producing electricity for good. The first activities related to the post operational phase and subsequent dismantling will begin.

Corporate PPA: het groene stroomleveringscontract voor bedrijven

Als grootste producent van hernieuwbare energie in België zet ENGIE zich in om de transitie naar een koolstofneutrale economie te versnellen. Energie-intensieve bedrijven nemen steeds meer initiatieven om hun koolstofuitstoot te verminderen. ENGIE ondersteunt hen hierin en biedt hun tal van oplossingen aan om hun duurzaamheidsdoelstellingen te halen. Een van deze oplossingen is het groene stroomleveringscontract, ofwel de corporate Power Purchase Agreement of PPA.

Umicore signs renewable electricity PPAs with ENGIE and Axpo to power two of its largest sites worldwide

Umicore has signed two separate long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), with ENGIE and Axpo to source renewable electricity from offshore and onshore wind turbines in Belgium. These agreements will cover more than half of the electricity demand from Umicore’s Belgian sites and help the Group achieve its objective to be carbon neutral by 2035.

Carmeuse, ENGIE and John Cockerill join forces to reduce industrial CO2 emissions in Wallonia

Carmeuse, ENGIE and John Cockerill have signed a Joint Development Agreement for an innovative Carbon Capture and Utilisation (“CCU”) project in Wallonia. This project will concentrate CO2 from an innovative type of lime kiln, combine it with green hydrogen and produce “e-methane”, a renewable gas that can be injected in the gas grid or used in transport or in the industry. The green hydrogen will be produced by a 75 MW electrolyser plant powered by green electricity. This project is the largest of its kind in the world. It opens new routes for significant carbon emission reductions in Europe and the world.
